Julio's Community Project

KEAN UNIVERSITY

I currently volunteer for Project Adelante, a Pre-College Bound program, in Kean University. The program focuses on providing Latino/Hispanic students from three districts (Passaic, Plainfield, and Perth Amboy) a free classes and services. Students attend Kean University every Saturday during the academic school year and and every day during a five-week summer session in their summer break. Since its establishment of 1988, the program has been very successful because it incorporates components that studies have shown to be key in the retention of Hispanic students. The program offers students between the grades of 6-12 to take academic classes in a college environment. Students have the privilege of taking courses in advanced mathematics, science, English, and counseling. In addition, the program offers tutoring in any academic areas and English as a second language (ESL).
As a former student, I decided to return to the program as a Teacher Assistant and Data Analyst and volunteer my skills and time as the program encounter major budget cuts from New Jersey Educational Grant. I have been an active volunteer for the program for more than two years. During weekdays (Mon-Fri) I am responsible of overseeing clerical work and delegate different assignments to other volunteers and student aids. In addition, I assist the program director, Jose Caceres, in fiscal reports, staff development meetings, and meetings with district board of education and Kean University staff.

On April 22, 2017, I continue to volunteered in the program as we host our annual “Project Adelante Open House” to current and prosperous students and parents. During this time, I served as a guest speaker and tour guide for parents to become familiar with the university and the classrooms utilized by their students. I had the honored to present my story within Kean and the program. It was at this time that I began to see the importance giving back is to the community.

In Project Adelante, I am responsible to keep data and records up to date in order to have the most accurate information in placed to prepare for drafting annual reports or reports that the school districts may required. Aside from my clerical responsibilities, I help the teachers in supervision of classrooms, tutoring sessions, and exam proctor.

I chose to come back as a volunteer to this program because I was a fruit from the great services and work that this organization does. It brings me joy to know that the program continues to serve a maximum of 180 students with limited resources. Many of the budget utilized in the program goes into covering educational costs, space, teacher salaries and administrator salaries, and student aids. Being able to represent this great organization continues to be an honor because many students that have entered this program have become professionals in their careers and role model to the current students.
